5 Inch Gauge.
After a little bit of pressure from a couple of mates telling me I should get into the world of Model Engineering railways, I bit the bullet and brought my first 5 inch gauge loco. I picked this up from Havelock North. this loco was once owned by David Spark. Its called a Hercules Traveler and its a Battery electric powered loco built in England by Ride On Railways Ltd. My plan is to paint this red and make it look more like a New Zealand loco (at some stage). I have now added a head light front and rear. I have removed the buffers getting it ready for painting and have add a fake NZR coupling to the front of it. I have now also joined 3 clubs so I can give it a run. Who knows one day I might put a track around the house.
I had my first drive of this loco on the New Plymouth track back on the 26th October 2019. Its second run was at the P Nth track on February the 8th 2020 and I have finally had it out again (after Covid) for a run on the Hawkes Bay Model Engineers track at Anderson Park in Napier on Sunday the 7th of February 2021. It goes really well. Also a big thank you to Ken Le Prou, who has just recently sold me his 5" rides trolley to go behind my loco. This was the main reason why I was in Napier over the weekend of the 6th & 7th of February and I was able to give it a run at Anderson Park on the Sunday the 7th when I took my loco there.
I had my loco once again at the Napier track on Sunday the 11th of April 2021. Keegan spent all afternoon riding the rails while I was there picking up some 5 inch gauged points and track that I had purchased from the club, since they have up graded to the bigger 71/4 and 5 inch gauge. A big thank you to the Hawkes Bay Model Engineers for offering this track. The idea of having a track running around my house has moved one step closer.
I have now also become a member of the Palmerston North Model Engineers, the Hawkes Bay Model Engineers and the New Plymouth Model Engineers.
We did a trip up to Pukekohe for a weekend away from the 25th to the 27th February 2022. While we were up there we picked up the 5 inch gauge track that I had brought off Ben Jeffcoat. I should now have nearly enough to go around the house.
